My name is Ivan Boden and I am a photographer and designer.
I began work early as a typesetter for ImageWorks, a small studio founded by my parents. I worked while attending undergraduate school at Ramapo College of NJ, and after a few years, I decided to leave school to work full time in the business, which was booming. My design education continued with studies at Pratt, and the Graphic Arts Technical Foundation, and valuable on the job training as a young designer. Some of our clients include Automatic Data Processing, IBM, Mercedes Benz, Sandoz, Seiko, Sherwin Williams, KPMG Peat Marwick, and many others. We did everything from corporate branding and identity, to annual reports, brochures, newsletters, advertisements, slide show presentations, display design, and web design and production. I had the wonderful privilege to work and learn with some of the finest designers, photographers, illustrators, graphic arts suppliers, programmers, printing plants, and many amazing writers, copy editors, and proofreaders.
By 1999, small design studios and agencies suffered when the promise of the dot-com bubble burst. We closed ImageWorks and I moved on and found a new position as manager of design services for ISO, a data analytics company in the insurance industry. The company and the design department I was responsible for grew and by October, 2009 went public. The growth continued, I became creative director, and the company evolved, both in name and leadership.
During that time, I joined InSource an organization devoted to support in-house designers and managers, to help them cope with corporate challenges, and I became a member of the board of directors. In my spare time, I picked up my camera as an outlet to have some fun and to be creative. It quickly developed into a passion that continues today.
After 15 years of corporate life, I chose to follow my heart and begin a second career as photographer.
As an award winning designer, I have worked with and art directed professional photographers over the years, from commercial advertisement and marketing campaigns, to brochures, display graphics, annual reports and more. I am fortunate to the have unique perspective of having worked as both designer and photographer.
I love meeting new people, exploring techniques, and learning every time I’m behind the lens. I spent eight years photographing in the theater arts, from small community theater, to magnate performing arts school, and at the university level. I’m active in leading photowalks in and around New York City, meetup groups, and I photograph actors, head shots, both in studio or on location, as well as weddings and events.
Several years ago, some friends and I started an all-volunteer organization called Smiles Are Free. Our mission, to give back to the community through photography. We arranged free portrait session for families that might be struggling due to economy, illness or circumstance.
It has been a joy working with such extraordinary and talented people, and giving back to families and the community through photography.
