My name is Ivan Boden and I am a photographer and designer.
I began my career as a typesetter for Just Your Type, a small studio founded by myself and my parents. I worked while attending undergraduate school at Ramapo College of NJ, then studied graphic design at Pratt. I left school to work full time in our burgeoning business. We offered a full design service and changed our name to ImageWorks to suit our new direction. We served fortune 500 companies and agencies, covering a broad range of industries with clients such as Automatic Data Processing, IBM, Mercedes-Benz, Sandoz, Seiko, Sherwin Williams, KPMG Peat Marwick to name a few. Or expertise ranged from designing corporate branding and identity systems, annual reports, brochures, newsletters, advertisements, slide show presentations, display design, web design and production. For many years, I had the privilege to work and learn from some of the finest people in the graphic arts industry, in the New York Metropolitan vicinity.
By 1999, the graphic arts industry suffered with the financial melt down and the dot-com bubble had burst. We closed the doors and I moved on. I began a new position as Senior Art Director and Manager of Design Services for Insurance Services Office (ISO), a data analytics company serving the insurance industry. The company and the design department I was responsible for grew and by October, 2009 became an initial public offering (IPO). The corporation name changed to Verisk Analytics and experienced rapid growth. I became creative director, and the company evolved, both in name and leadership.
During that time, I joined InSource as a member of the board of directors. InSource is an organization devoted to support in-house designers and managers to provide them with the tools to help handle difficult corporate challenges. In my spare time, I picked up a camera and began photographing as a creative outlet and for my own enjoyment. It quickly developed into a passion that continues today.
After 15 years of corporate life, I chose to follow my heart and begin a second career as a photographer.
As an award winning designer, I have worked with and art directed professional photographers over many years, from commercial advertisement and marketing campaigns, to brochures, display graphics, annual reports and more. I am fortunate to have a unique perspective, having worked as both designer and photographer.
I love meeting new people, exploring techniques, and learning every time I’m behind the lens. I spent eight years photographing in the theater arts, from small community theater, to magnate performing arts school and university level. I was active in leading photowalks in and around New York City, and I photograph actors, head shots, both in studio or on location, and covered several weddings and events.
Some years ago, friends and I started an all-volunteer organization called Smiles Are Free. Our mission, to give back to the community through photography. We arranged free portrait session for families that might be struggling due to economy, illness or circumstance.
It has been a joy working with such extraordinary and talented people, and giving back to families and the community through photography.
